What to Do After an Auto Injury

Nobody ever gets into their vehicle with the expectation that they're going to end up in a car accident. Unfortunately, it happens to thousands of people in the United States each day. Even a seemingly minor auto accident can result in lasting injuries that could impact the rest of your life. Here at Highland Chiropractic, we specialize in the treatment of auto-accident related injuries in the area of Louisville KY.

After the Accident

Knowing what steps to take following an auto accident is the best way to be prepared in the event that you ever find yourself involved in one. For starters, remain calm and assess yourself for injuries. If you're okay, check on others involved (passengers in your car, people in other vehicles, pedestrians, etc.). Use your cell phone or another person's phone to call for medical and police assistance. If the damage is minimal, move all involved vehicles to the side of the road so as to not block traffic.

If you or somebody else is injured in the accident, remain calm and communicate your injuries to first responders. If you believe you have suffered from a spinal injury, do not attempt to remove yourself from the vehicle unless you're in a potentially life-threatening situation. The same goes for others who have suffered from neck or back injuries; moving these injured people could result in further (and irreparable) damage.

Seeking Chiropractic Care

Even in instances of low-impact auto accidents, it's recommended that you seek medical attention. After all, many injuries don't make themselves known until days or even weeks after the accident, so it's best to be checked out by a doctor sooner rather than later.

One of the most common injuries caused by car accidents is that of whiplash; this occurs when the body is propelled forward and stopped suddenly (as will happen if you're wearing a seatbelt), resulting in potential head, neck, and spinal pain.

If you have experienced a spinal injury or spinal pain as a result of your auto accident, it's recommended that you seek chiropractic care as soon as possible so you can receive an accurate diagnosis and begin treatment right away.
